Marie Phillips, the proprietor of Abelha Bookkeeping, has a passion for helping sole traders and small business owners to improve their profitability by better managing their cashflow.
Marie was born in West Bromwich and lived there until she was nearly fifteen when her family moved to Palm Beach County, Florida. After graduating from high school, Marie attended Florida International University where she majored in political science and minored in international relations.
Whilst studying to become a paralegal, Marie first became interested in the field of bookkeeping when she took a position as an Office Manager/Bookkeeper. In this position, she managed the daily bookkeeping and payroll for a condominium association with more than 250 units. Simultaneously, Marie began managing the bookkeeping for a two location sporting goods company.
After graduating with her paralegal degree, Marie was hired as a Bankruptcy Paralegal. In this position, Marie created a Petition which is basically final accounts for individuals, couples and businesses who want to file for bankruptcy.
Missing home, Marie returned to the UK in 2010 and attended law school. The following year, Marie graduated with a Graduate Diploma of Law but realised that working within the UK legal system was not for her. Subsequently, Marie worked different roles for a couple of years which included within a mortgage department in a building society before going on to work in the First-Tier Tax Tribunal in the Civil Service.
With a desire to be self-employed, Marie decided to study and become an ICB Bookkeeper and Payroll Agent. As a result of completing her level 2, level 3 and payroll studies, Marie was recently shortlisted for the ICB Student of the Year. Marie looks forward to growing her client base by adding self-assessment tax to her services, which she is currently studying.
